Small spaces require regular decluttering, and Ariel Sun understands this in her organic modern Brooklyn apartment. “Your home mirrors who you are and changes as you do. Regular decluttering is really important, as it clears space for fresh energy to flow in,” she says. In the 650-square-foot apartment that Tracey Forzaglia shares with her husband, Thomas, the term “zone out” takes on a different meaning. The challenge? They needed to create two separate work-from-home spaces. “Zones were the answer to dividing the living room into a dining area, coffee bar, TV and gaming spot, conversation area, bar, office, and music space. It was hard to believe all these activities can occur comfortably in one large room,” Tracey says.

Marina De Salis lives alone in her Portland loft, which she adoringly calls her “verdant sanctuary.” She’s chosen the classically minimalist black and white look for her space, with vibrant pops of green in the form of plants and indoor trees. A decidedly pared-down aesthetic affords her plenty of space for entertaining despite the apartment’s smaller size, and a clever mezzanine allows for a dedicated sleeping space.

They’ve mastered small-space living by rethinking their open floor plan and creating spaces defined by furniture rather than walls. “Don’t be a wall hugger! I’ve learned over the years of decorating my own spaces to try to visualize the floor plan in a more fluid way rather than filling wall space,” Celeste encourages.

The 600-square-foot apartment has an open floor plan that wasn’t heavy on personality when she moved in. Now, the space reflects this couple’s shared life. “I’ve always tried to make sure our interior style reflects us as people, too, and wanted to make a space that felt personal and very ‘us,’” Alicia explains.

This 590-square-foot apartment outside Oakland, California, was the 2020 Small/Cool Winner for Apartment Therapy. And a glance inside shows why: This was a huge renovation from a previously dark, dated space, and has been turned into a beautiful, airy home, thanks to Michelle Spetner and her partner. Here, neutral tones on walls and cabinets serve as a backdrop for dramatic pops of color sprinkled throughout the place. This creates a cozy, cohesive vibe from start to finish.

At 600 square feet, this Washington, D.C., apartment looks like it belongs in the center of Paris. Black and white accent pieces lend to the chic, sophisticated aesthetic, and a strategically placed IKEA bookshelf carves out a private space for owner Channing Foster’s bed despite the apartment’s small size. It’s her proudest DIY, says Channing. “I love using the open cubes to break it up and let a bit of extra light into the bed nook. Plus, they double as extra nightstand space on the back.”
