St. Simons: Ocean Lodge Resort

A few weekends ago, Mark and I went back to St. Simons for a little getaway. We love going to St. Simons and any excuse will do. We really want to go back and stay a week next time to really have time to relax and enjoy the island. This time we stayed in a beautiful Mediterranean style resort called the Ocean Lodge Resort, so today I’ll share that with you. General Manager and Chef Matt Schleis somehow found my blog and invited me to come and visit the Ocean Lodge Resort in St. Simons. We don’t need much of an excuse to go and visit the Golden Isles so we went on a recent August weekend for 2 nights and really enjoyed it. Matt has recently taken over management of the resort and is making some great improvements. In full disclosure, we were hosted on this trip and got 2 nights stay and most of our meals comped at the resort. But our experience was a good one, so I’ll share my opinion on the stay.

I remember passing the Ocean Lodge when we were there before and bike riding. It’s in a great location, just across the street from the beach. The downtown village of St. Simons is just a short walk away.

Inside the lobby, an opulent ceiling and fireplace welcomes guests to this Mediterranean resort. We got checked in and headed to the penthouse where we would stay for a couple of nights. The resort is 5 floors in height and the penthouse is up there with a beautiful 1 bedroom and living room space, along with 2 bathrooms and a kitchen.

The tiled floor makes it perfect for taking along your furbaby and so we took Daisy with us, since the resort is dog friendly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely penthouse space and enjoyed the nightly views of the ocean across the street and watching the sun go down. There’s nothing better than sunset at the beach!

This balcony was a fave spot to sit and take it all in. It was beautiful our here with a lovely ocean breeze.

Daisy enjoyed it too and we were so glad we got to take her along.

The beach is just a short walk away from the Ocean Lodge Resort.

Also on the top floor is the bar and restaurant for the resort, The Roof Top. It was a beautiful spot to chill and relax in the afternoon and our first night there, we were treated to an exceptional meal up here.

The view was outstanding and we had a leisurely dinner at this corner table with drinks, appetizer, and main course.

Chef Matt came out to greet us and it was a pleasure meeting him. He made us feel right at home and we loved staying here.

Steve, the restaurant host, gave us a warm welcome as well and also made us feel so at home here on the roof.

We had a fried shrimp appetizer that was to die for.

Daisy got to hang out with us at the table too and she was a perfect little princess.

I had the special of the evening, a fresh catch of fish, over collards and grits. It was amazingly good! I ate every bite.

Mark got a fish dish too with asparagus and he really enjoyed his as well. Everything was so appetizing and delicious.

We couldn’t resist trying the pecan pie ala mode and by this time, I could hardly hold anymore food, but I took it back to our room for later. Wow, was it all a fabulous meal!

We had a fun bike riding morning the next day and then came back for Sunday Brunch, which looked so good too. I had the shrimp and grits and this dish was outstanding. Love, loved it! Mark got a standard breakfast of eggs and potatoes and after he saw my shrimp and grits, wished he had gotten it too. And he’s not usually a grits fan like I am. This was one of the best shrimp and grits I’ve ever tasted.

The views from the restaurant are so much a part of the ambience on the Roof Top, so I would highly recommend it for dinner. That’s our room balcony right there too that we stayed in.

This area of the beach has some 2 and 3 story buildings, but no high rises, which I’m glad is not prevalent in St. Simons. It’s a much more laid back beach town with quaint houses and cottages and just a few buildings that have more than 3 stories.

What a view we had!

The sunsets are stunning.

St. Simons has such a wonderful feel and ambience. If you’ve never been, I’d highly recommend it for a beach getaway in Georgia.

We only stayed 2 nights, but really relaxed and had a good time. We never get tired of St. Simons and we’d like to go back for a week next time. Our full day, we borrowed bikes from the resort and took off for a nice bike ride. St. Simons is flat so it’s easy riding.

We love bike riding around the cute neighborhoods.

And of course, the pier and lighthouse are always pretty to see.

The big oak trees just draw me in everytime, I can imagine how many people have strolled by these trees over the years.

The lighthouse is always beautiful, standing as a beacon in St. Simons.

Enjoy scenes from our bike ride in and out of the coastal neighborhoods at one end of the island.

I love seeing the birds along the way.

We love to see all the different types of houses in these neighborhoods and it’s fun to dream about having a place here. I doubt it would happen, but what fun that would be.

This end of the beach is a popular spot for people to come out and sit.

The cottages always draw me in. I love the smaller quaint ones as well as the bigger homes.

A good example of a tabby house, there are many tabby homes around here, made of oyster shells and concrete.

We enjoy riding through these favorite neighborhoods to take in all the pretty homes. We would definitely come back and stay at the Ocean Lodge again. It was a very neat place to stay, we loved the penthouse, the balcony and views and the Roof Top restaurant with dinner and brunch was a big plus. I think you would love it too!

If you go and give it a try, use code OCLORE15 at the Ocean Lodge Resort direct reservations for 15% off from 9/1/24 to 12/30/24. If you go to visit Ocean Lodge Resort, let them know I sent you! I think you will love it and Chef Matt is doing some wonderful improvements to the resort.
