This Walmart Bookshelf DIY Created (Instant!) Closet Storage

You don’t need to spend a fortune on a full closet organization system if you have a walk-in closet. Just ask TikTok DIYer Peyton (@peytonmheath), who repurposed $35 Walmart bookshelves to create a stunning walk-in closet on a budget.

Peyton recently shared a popular TikTok video documenting the process of creating her “dream walk-in closet” on July 5. First, she purchased five of Walmart’s white Mainstays 5-Shelf Bookcases. Next, she picked up 30-inch tension rods from Lowe’s to hold her clothing hangers.

All that was left to do was build the shelves and install the tension rods to create a gorgeous walk-in closet with dedicated shelves for not only her clothes, but for key accessories like shoes, hats, and sunglasses, too. 

As she explained in the comments below the video, the entire project cost her just $260 in total — a budget-friendly solution for custom-looking closet organization.

Since Peyton first shared her TikTok almost three weeks ago, the video has received over 269,600 likes and 4.4 million views.

“This is so cute ✨!!!” one viewer commented. “Definitely going to Walmart now and getting me some 😍.”

“I legit think I’m gonna do this INSIDE my closet,” another commenter wrote. “This is so smart lol.”

Of course, these shelves can be repurposed to hold more than just books or clothes.

As one TikToker pointed out, “I made a pantry with these shelves 🥰.”

You can find Walmart’s Mainstays’ five-shelf bookshelf in stores and on the company’s website, where it’s available in both black and white color varieties for $34.96 each.

On the Walmart website, one reviewer said the bookshelf is much “more than just a bookcase,” adding, “the style is clean and minimalistic, which is exactly what I wanted,” and while they were going to try to use it as added storage for folded closet items, they quickly moved it into their kitchen. “When I SAW the thing standing in a blank area near the bay windows, I realized this was more than a bookcase. At first I thought it’d be a great spot for cookbooks and baskets of junk I could get out of the kitchen drawers. But as I began to organize, I realized this was a great way to store and organize baking supplies.” 

The bookshelf is sold with two fixed shelves that can hold up to 50 pounds each as well as three adjustable shelves that can hold up to 35 pounds each. It stands at 71 inches tall, so make sure to keep that in mind when devising all the DIY projects you’ll do with it.
